Jet Black 3 were formed in early 2016 and are made up of Robert Papworth (vocals) , Phil Borrett (guitar) and Andrew Ellis (drums). Rob and Phil have known each other for many years and bring together inspiration from late 60’s Canadian rock and 80’s rock, whilst Andrew adds a punk element. Jet Black 3 like to mix things up with Phil using a guitar and bass amp to give a more spectral sound. They describe their major influences as Velvet Revolver, Guns n Roses, The Who and Led Zeppelin.
Jet Black 3 are appearing at Planet Rock’s Winters End in February 2018. The Beating Drum is now available to buy or stream from iTunes, Amazon Music, Google Play etc.
The Beating Drum is filled with buzzy guitar and strident drums which change in tempo and intensity. The vocals reminded me slightly of Pearl Jam as they ooze swagger and have an edge that forces you to pay attention. The guitar produces a multi textured tone from the woody bass sound to a more strident tone.
The track builds and relaxes back into the verse building to an intensity in the chorus.
I think this is a great track and have replayed it over and over. The richness of the vocals combining with the determined edge give this track a real depth. The drums and guitars add interest and texture.
I am really looking forward to seeing Jet Black 3 play live and hearing more of their work.
