KAZE – No Filter EP

Review by:  SpinSundayMusicReviews.com

The KAZE debut EP, No Filter was released on 10/03/2017 with a sell out gig in The Castle, Manchester and their music has been received with great enthusiasm so far.

Some of their main influences are Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and The Cardigans. They teamed up with friends from the RNCM – where they studied – to form a band and, shortly after, decided on the name KAZE, meaning ‘wind’ in Japanese.

In October 2016, after successfully Crowdfunding £3,622, they travelled down to Kent to record their first EP, No Filter. The full line-up is; Amy on vocals, Graham on vocals/keys, Thomas Fripp on guitar, Dan Peate on bass and Jonathan Needham on drums. It was produced by Colin Towns (Ivor Novello songwriting judge/BAFTA nominated composer) and engineered by Toby Wood (Lord Of The Rings/associate EMMY Award winner).
The single, Pinned On You (taken form their EP), opened two of Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 Music shows recently, and has been featured on Jim Gellatly’s new music show on Amazing Radio 3 times so far… they are currently ‘Artist of the week’ for Richer Unsigned and Pinned On You also featured as ‘Track of the day’ on Ralph’s Life Music Blog.

Pinned on You starts with an other world vibe but then kicks up into an 80’s feel which is reminiscent of the Cardigans but bought up to date.  Amy’s vocals are strong which work well with the vibrant guitars which clash and change in texture.  The drums add percussive lifts and give this a bit of an offbeat kilter which challenges the listener slightly.

Feel  has a more summery lighter feel, with a  jazz vibe as the drums shimmer and interplay with the keys.  You can really hear Amy’s vocals here which work well when harmonised with Graham’s.  There are changes in tempo that are reinforced by the drums and guitars.

Unfamiliar Room has a slightly folky quality and reminiscent of Kate Nash, in my opinion.  This could be a difficult listen for some as it a heart fully on your sleeve account of being in hospital and personal experiences for Graham.  It has a haunting quality which is played out with the acoustic guitar and very emotional vocals.

Come Away With Me  is an urge to “come and see life’s mysteries”, looking through unfiltered eyes.  The melody from the guitars with the drumming and some great, slightly eastern feel riffs make this into an uplifting tune that morphs into a soft rock track, with joyous, transcendental guitars.

There is much to admire here on this EP, there are some very emotional lyrics, great playing and intense vocals, combining with interesting and sometimes challenging melodies.
